Caesarean Section

Symptoms & When It Is Recommended
- Recommended when vaginal birth would be unsafe for mother or baby
Causes
- Baby in breech or transverse position
- Placenta praevia
- Fetal distress in labour
- Labour not progressing
- Some previous caesareans

- Bleeding, infection, blood clots
- Longer recovery than normal delivery
Diagnosis
- Antenatal scans and monitoring
- Decision made with you, explaining the reason
Treatment
- Spinal anaesthesia in most cases — you stay awake
- Baby is usually delivered within minutes
Recovery
- Usually 3–4 days in hospital
- Walking early helps recovery
- Avoid heavy lifting for about 6 weeks
