Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Two or more pregnancy losses. With evaluation, a cause can often be found and treated.
Symptoms
- Two or more miscarriages
- Bleeding or cramping in early pregnancy
Causes
- Chromosomal factors
- Uterine abnormalities such as a septum
- Antiphospholipid syndrome and clotting disorders
- Thyroid disorders or uncontrolled diabetes
- Often no cause is found
Risk Factors
- Maternal age over 35
- Previous miscarriages
- Obesity and smoking
Diagnosis
- Blood tests for clotting, thyroid and sugar
- Ultrasound and hysteroscopy of the uterus
- Karyotype testing of both partners when indicated
Treatment
- Hysteroscopic removal of a uterine septum (metroplasty)
- Blood-thinning treatment for clotting disorders
- Hormonal support in early pregnancy when indicated
- Close monitoring in the next pregnancy
Recovery
- Hysteroscopic metroplasty is usually a day-care procedure
- Planning of the next pregnancy is discussed individually
