What tests are performed at the in-house Male Infertility & Andrology Lab?
Our laboratory performs diagnostic semen analysis assessing total sperm count, concentration, progressive motility, vitality, morphology (Strict Kruger criteria), semen volume, pH, and white blood cell count.
How should a semen sample be collected for accurate testing?
The sample should be collected after 2 to 5 days of sexual abstinence via masturbation into a sterile container. Collection is best done on-site in our private collection room to ensure immediate laboratory processing within 30 minutes.
What causes low sperm count (oligospermia) or poor motility (asthenospermia)?
Common causes include varicoceles (swollen veins in the scrotum), hormonal imbalances, previous reproductive tract infections, exposure to excessive heat, nutritional deficiencies, smoking, alcohol, and high stress.
Can low sperm count or poor sperm motility be improved medically?
Yes. Many male factor issues respond positively to medical therapies, including antioxidant treatments, nutritional supplements, hormonal balancing, lifestyle modifications, and treatment of subclinical infections over a 3-month spermatogenesis cycle.
What is a semen wash and why is it necessary for IUI?
Raw seminal fluid contains prostaglandins and cellular debris that can cause uterine cramping and infection if placed into the uterus. A semen wash isolates the cleanest, most vigorous sperm in a sterile nutrient medium safe for intrauterine insemination.
When are advanced options like ICSI or surgical sperm retrieval considered?
For severe oligospermia, complete absence of sperm in ejaculate (azoospermia), or high sperm DNA fragmentation, advanced techniques like PESA/TESA sperm retrieval and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) are recommended.
