Uterine Fibroids
Non-cancerous growths of the uterine muscle — very common, and often treatable without removing the uterus.
Symptoms
- Heavy or prolonged periods
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Frequent urination or constipation
- Difficulty conceiving or recurrent miscarriage
- Many fibroids cause no symptoms
Causes
- Hormones — oestrogen and progesterone promote fibroid growth
- Genetic changes in uterine muscle cells
- Growth factors that influence tissue growth
Risk Factors
- Age 30–50
- Family history of fibroids
- Early onset of periods
- Obesity
- Vitamin D deficiency
Diagnosis
- Pelvic examination
- Pelvic ultrasound (transabdominal / transvaginal)
- Hysteroscopy for fibroids inside the cavity
- Blood tests for anaemia
Treatment
- Watchful monitoring for small, symptom-free fibroids
- Medicines to control bleeding and pain
- Hysteroscopic removal of submucous fibroids
- Laparoscopic myomectomy — removes fibroids, preserves the uterus
- Hysterectomy when family is complete and symptoms are severe
Recovery
- Hysteroscopic removal: usually home the same or next day
- Laparoscopic myomectomy: typically 1–2 days in hospital, back to routine in 2–3 weeks
- Pregnancy planning after myomectomy is discussed individually

Clear, compassionate answers to the questions patients ask Dr. Fehmida Shaikh most often.
Do all fibroids need surgery?
No. Small fibroids that cause no symptoms are usually just monitored with periodic ultrasound.
Can I get pregnant after fibroid removal?
Many women conceive after myomectomy. The timing of pregnancy after surgery depends on the size and location of the fibroids removed.
Can fibroids come back?
New fibroids can develop after myomectomy, which is why follow-up scans are advised.

Doctor Advice
Heavy periods are not something to simply live with. An ultrasound is quick and painless, and most fibroids can be managed while keeping the uterus.
